A normal day for Kate Young involves styling celebs like Michelle Williams and Natalie Portman for the red carpet, but why should stars have all the fun?
“I’ve always wanted to create an affordable collection of special occasion dresses so more women can feel the magic that accompanies getting dressed up,” says Kate.
And what better way to get glam than by giving our fans the chance to be styled by Kate herself? We brought four Target Style superfans to our Kate Young for Target shoot in New York, where the designer dished out personalized styling advice for each of their own big moments. We even managed to keep the paparazzi away.
Red Carpet Event: Girls’ Night Out
This year, a fire at Rachel’s college destroyed all of her paintings and supplies. “It’s been very tough,” she said, “but my friends know how to get me smiling again, and I would love to take them all out for a fabulous night on the town!”
Rachel’s look actually features two Kate Young for Target pieces: the strapless black cocktail dress and the sheer polka dot bodysuit. “Putting a bodysuit under a dress is a great way for the arm-conscious to go strapless,” Kate says. “Rachel is petite, and a fit-and-flare dress with a nipped waist is forgiving for many body types.”
Allie, Fashion Designer
Red Carpet Event: Best Friend’s Wedding
“I’m a bridesmaid this summer, and we haven’t picked our dresses yet,” said Allie, a fashion designer. “Maybe we could wear Kate’s dresses!”
This black and white column dress is one of Kate’s favorites from the collection.“It’s one of those pieces that really makes a statement,” says the designer. “Dramatize the look with a bold red lip and accessories.”
The key to a gown like this is to get the right support—try a strapless, backless bra or a self-adhesive version like the Fashion Forms Ultralight Nude bra. Most importantly, the dress should hit right at the floor. “Don’t let your toes show!” says Kate.
Helene, Fashion Blogger
Red Carpet Event: Blind Date
“I have a blind date coming up, and I’d love to have a fresh new look,” says Helene, a Brooklyn-based blogger.
“This acid-green color is unexpected, and it says that you’re not afraid to make a statement,” Kate says.
The stretchy fabric is comfy, but it also provides a nice shape. “Wear it with bare legs, pumps and a clutch for an evening look,” Kate says. “Or wear this look during the day with tights and a jacket.”
Jessica, Mom and Blogger
Red Carpet Event: A Night On the Town
Jessica, who blogs about Manhattan life with three kids at Momma’s Gone City, was excited to get dressed up for something every busy mom wants—“A real night on the town in New York!”
Kate chose a swingy skater dress with a flattering, flirty skirt. “The cutout in the back gives an element of surprise,” she says. “But it’s designed so you can still wear a bra with it. I love the idea of something demure yet alluring.”
